COMMUNICATION

Communication with parents and families in any setting where a young child is involved in, is essential to the positive attitudes for all.
For an early childhood setting to run smoothly and for all stakeholders to feel welcomed and secure in the setting, educators need to ensure this is happening and that they are continuing to improve those skills.
Below I have documented three methods I have used as tools for communicating effective with parents.

Communicating with parents
As stated in my Statement of Teaching and Learning and my Philosophy, I believe that communication with parents in a child's life (primary/ early childhood) is vital for an educator to maintain.
Communicating with parents is essential in the learning and development of their child, and helps them to understand what their child is doing during a day at kindergarten.
I feel that the way in which educators, such as myself communicate, both verbally and non-verbally, will affect the level in which parents and families will contribute and connect with the setting.

Personal Profile

Personal profile displayed for parents and families
Through the use of a personal portfolio display I can briefly describe to parents and families about who I am and why I will be working with their children, and for how long I will be a part of their child's setting.
As a tool for communicating with parents, I implemented this display as an effective use for parents to feel comfortable with someone else being involved as part of their child's learning in their setting.
The display I constructed of my portfolio, is dispelled out the front where the parents meet and sign in, so that I am confident majority of parents will see and read this and feel comfortable of talking to me and introducing themselves to me.
It is also more comforting for me to know that the parents know who I am and what my name is so as though when i introduce myself or am talking to them, they can use my name and I feel as though I have been respected as an educator.
I feel that the use of my personal profile was successful and as I have used this in the past placements, I would continue to use this as a professional when meeting parents and families. It is a settling tool for parents to be introduced to a new face and I felt it was an effective way for parents to learn about me and my study as a student.

Displaying pedagogical planning

Intended planning displayed for parents
Programming for young children is important and I feel that it is just as important to display some programming for parents as it is to file it away. I had an area on the parent board where I was able to communicate to parents and families through the observations and planning I have conduced on their children.
I felt it was important to display this information so that parents can view their child in their setting and see the activities they have been enjoying and who they have been spending their time with.
I would change the display every 2 weeks, to give the parents and families a chance to view them and changing them also would encourage parents to continually view this board with information.
Displaying my programming and planning for parents and families had its positives and negatives. I would display items for viewing at least every week, although the parents would come in collect their child and then leave. I found that parent helpers, committee parents and those select few parents would constantly view the board for updates, although those parents who did not stay would not look at the information about their child. I was pleased with the parents who did take the time to notice my hard work and comment that it was a great idea for parents to view photos and details of their child's play. In the future, I may move the notice board to outdoors, there some parents may see this more clearly and have more time to view the information displayed.

(Display, showing my appreciation for parents and their support)
Throughout my journey through teaching rounds, I have always been so grateful for the support and respect that I have been shown from mentor teachers and specially families and parents.
I have found that in my most recent placement that the support I was getting and the welcoming relationships and respect that i received, I developed a picture page that I could display to communicate my appreciation to the parents and families for their support over my time at the kindergarten.
I found this to be a really effective method of observation and communication with parents as it was personal, from me to the parents and families and they were appreciative of the effort i had gone to. I displayed this outdoors, near sign in book so that I could e more certain that a majority of parents and families would see this. Many parents I had build relationships with commented to me how lovely it was that I had acknowledged all people involved in the kindergarten not just staff and children. I feel that I will use this in my future placements or even as a professional teacher and ensuring I always thank everyone for their hard work.
